Ideye: ‘My Mum Tried To Stop Me From Playing Football’

West Brom and Super Eagles star speaks on life before stardom.

Having left home at 16 to pursue football against his mum’s wishes, Brown Ideye is thankful he can smile now. So much so he is able to give a highly animated impression of her watching him play for West Bromwich Albion.

Squinting to study an imaginary television back home in Nigeria, his arms flap wildly. ‘Don’t kick him!’ he shouts, mimicking his mother Teresa’s voice. ‘Ref can’t you see!’ he jabs his fingers.

‘Each time West Brom play my mother is wearing my shirt, sitting down in front of the telly, and she is like this,’ Ideye laughs.

It is quite some turnaround given she banned him from playing the game as a 14-year-old through fears he would get caught up with criminal gangs on the streets of Lagos.

After his father Joel died, she even sent him to her sister’s remote village eight hours away to keep him from football and, as she saw it, trouble.

A decade later Ideye, 26, is West Brom’s £10million record buy and, after initial difficulties, beginning to make good on his price tag.

He faces Aston Villa in the FA Cup quarter-final today, looking for revenge on the local rivals who triumphed in a dramatic Premier League match on Tuesday night.

He scored two goals in the last round to do more than any in the 4-0 destruction of West Ham United, and is allowing himself dreams of Wembley.

A May date at the grand stadium might present the chance for his mum to support her son in person for the first time. ‘In summer it’s possible, right now it’s cold for her,’ he says. ‘I want us to get to the final. If we do then I can arrange it.’

Had she got her way all those years ago, however, Ideye would not be a Premier League player. ‘It’s hard growing up in Lagos,’ he says. ‘There is always a story to tell in a city like that. My friends were involved in crazy stuff. They were bad boys of the area. I was picked up once by the police.

‘My mum stopped me going out with them. She was upset. Each time I told her I wanted to play football she would say, “No you’re going to be with your friends.”

Ideye was sent to live with his aunt but eventually ran away to train with his old coach and finally told his mum he wanted to make a 200-mile trip to Bayelsa State to play regularly. ‘She didn’t accept. That’s how I left. I went to Bayelsa State then Ocean Boys. Then bam, bam, bam.’

The bams are Neuchatel Xamax in Switzerland, Sochaux in France, and Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine, where he scored 33 goals in 74 games and earned most of his 24 Nigeria caps.

Once he had signed professional forms, Ideye patched up his relationship with his mum. Tears flowed. ‘When I got the contract in Switzerland I went back home, sat with my family and had breakfast, dinner, lunch, everyone happy.

‘Afterwards she called me into her room and said, “I’m sorry about everything, your dad is late and I am the only person who can guide you. I looked at what your friends were doing and believed if I left you that is how you’d become.” I said, “I get that.” She started crying. She could not believe she tried to stop me becoming what she is enjoying today.’

Having looked well short of his pedigree in the opening months of the season and on the verge of a cut-price deal on deadline day to Qatar side Al-Gharafa, a glorious spell of four goals in six days (three games) followed.

Cultivating an understanding alongside Saido Berahino and with guidance from Tony Pulis, Ideye looks to have found his feet in England. ‘I took a lot of time to adapt,’ he admits. ‘I was overwhelmed that I am the record signing. I put a lot of pressure on myself. People are not patient.

‘The game doesn’t turn out the way I want, I become frustrated, I keep on pushing when I am supposed to calm down. Things were going so fast.

‘As for the social media, you can’t expect everyone to like you. They will say what they want. I don’t see what can shake me given what has happened before.

‘It’s inspiration. They are pushing me to my success. I like people criticising me.

‘That one week turned out to be something I dreamt. I felt this day would come. Getting back to the Brown Ideye people know.

‘One day the people who are saying, “He’s no good” are the same people who will say, “Don’t let him go.”

He hopes to be running in celebration at Villa Park, performing the somersault tumble that marked his last goal. ‘I always did that when I was a child,’ he says. ‘When you’re excited you find yourself doing things you don’t plan. The fans love it so I will keep on doing it.’

Ronaldo’s Richest Footballer In The World!

Cristiano Ronaldo is the wealthiest footballer in the world with a personal fortune of £152m – some £7m more than his rival Lionel Messi.

After an outstanding 2014 which saw Ronaldo inspire Real Madrid to Champions League success and win the Ballon d’Or, he has increased the wealth gap to the Barcelona and Argentina star.

According to the Goal.com Rich List, released on Thursday, Ronaldo and Messi enjoy fortunes considerably higher than any other footballer currently playing professionally.

Their totals, which take into account sponsorship revenue as well as wages and bonuses, are well above that of Neymar, who comes third in the list with a fortune of £97.9m.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Paris Saint-Germain and Sweden is worth £76.1m, while Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is the highest-ranked Englishman on the list in fifth on £74.6m.

Brazilian star Kaka, about to start his career with Orlando City in Major League Soccer, is sixth in the rankings on £69.6m, followed by Samuel Eto’o (£63.1m), Raul (£61.6m) and Ronaldinho (£60.2m).

Former England midfielder Frank Lampard, currently playing for Manchester City ahead of his move to New York City in the MLS, rounds out the top 10 with a personal fortune of £58m.

Other English players in the top 20 are Rio Ferdinand (12th, £52.2m), Steven Gerrard (14th, £46.4m) and John Terry (20th, £40.6m).

There are two other Man City players listed, with Yaya Toure in 15th on £44.9m and Sergio Aguero 19th on £42m.

Last year’s Goal Rich List revealed Ronaldo had a personal wealth of £122m, with Messi close behind on £120.5m.

Guardiola: Bayern’s Six Goals Per Game Not Good Enough

Pep Guardiola says he is not satisfied with Bayern Munich’s recent gluttony of goals and is demanding even more from the Bundesliga champions.

Bayern have scored 18 goals in their last three league matches – winning 4-1, 6-0 and 8-0 – but goalscoring did not come as freely in their midweek DFB-Pokal clash against Eintracht Braunschweig, in which they triumphed 2-0.

Guardiola is unrepentant in his demands of the Bavarians ahead of today’s clash with Hannover, which comes four days before they host Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League last 16 second leg.

“We must do better in attack,” he told reporters on Friday. “In defence we are imperious – opponents have very few chances against us.

“Yes, recently we have scored a lot of goals, but that’s because our players are so good. Our overall attacking game must get better.”

Ancelotti Insist Real Will Finish On High

Ahead of this afternoon clash against Athletic Club Bilbao at San Mamés, Carlo Ancelotti has assured that he remains ‘confident’ about the remainder of the season for Real Madrid, and expects it to be a fruitful one for them upon its conclusion.

“I’m confident. It’s an important moment in our season; every game is a significant one for us now. We’re on top in the league and are in a good place in Europe. I’m convinced that we’ll continue having a good season until the end,” Ancelotti insisted.

Regarding tomorrow’s game at Athletic Club Bilbao – a team who are fresh off a Copa Del Rey semi-final victory over Espanyol on Wednesday night – Ancelotti has affirmed that his side’s work ethic will be very important. “The intensity will be key. Winning at San Mamés is always difficult and to do so, the application of the team has to be at its maximum,” said the Italian. In terms of improvements in the game, Ancelotti did admit that he’s looking for Madrid to be ‘more efficient’ at San Mamés however. “We’ve lost a bit of efficiency in the final third recently.

Ribery: Alaba’s Free Kicks Are Madness

Franck Ribery has described Bayern Munich team-mate David Alaba’s free kicks as “madness” after his latest super strike from distance.

The Austrian left-back has scored in three successive DFB-Pokal matches for the Bavarians – the latest of which was a stunning free kick to open the scoring against Eintracht Braunschweig in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory.

It’s the second time that Alaba has smashed home a set piece from distance, having helped them defeat Stuttgart last month from a dead ball situation, and Ribery was glowing in his praise.

“It was a super free kick. His efforts are just madness,” the French forward told Bild. “You cannot take them any better than he does.”

Mario Gotze echoed Ribery’s sentiments and, though he is partial to a set piece strike himself, he conceded that Alaba is going to be at the front of the pecking order more frequently at this rate.

niesta: Barcelona proud of making Copa del Rey final

Alhough expectations are always high for the Catalans to reach showpiece matches, the Spaniard stressed how tough the cup journeys can be after Wednesday's win over Villarreal

Andres Iniesta has expressed Barcelona's collective pride at reaching their fourth Copa del Rey final in five seasons.

Villarreal put up a fight at El Madrigal in Wednesday's semi-final second leg but were outclassed by their clinical Catalan opponents, with Neymar scoring at either end of the match and Luis Suarez bagging the other goal in a 3-1 win.

The 6-2 aggregate triumph kept the Catalans in the hunt for treble success and set up a final appearance on May 30 against Athletic Bilbao, who defeated Espanyol 2-0 to complete a 3-1 win over two legs.

Iniesta, who played all 90 minutes at El Madrigal, says the team are thrilled to be one victory away from silverware and sees they will now devote their attention to La Liga and European glory.

"We're very happy, now we can focused on the other two competitions," the attacking midfielder told reporters.

"Reaching a final is something to be proud of. We are always expected to reach finals but it is actually very hard.

"Athletic will be very difficult in the final. The Santiago Bernabeu would be a great stadium to play at in the final but the important thing is that we're in the final and trying to win it."

Welbeck: I've improved since I left Manchester United

Danny Welbeck insists he has improved as a player since swapping Manchester United for Arsenal in a €20 million deal last summer.

The 24-year-old left Old Trafford in a bid to find more regular opportunities as a central striker, but has often played second fiddle to Olivier Giroud in north London this season, scoring just seven goals in 27 appearances in all competitions.

But Welbeck insists he is happy to play wherever Arsene Wenger puts him and believes he has made progress at Arsenal.

"I think it's gone okay," he told reporters. "I wish to do a lot more, definitely will do and it's something I want to build on and keep progressing.

"But I feel like I've improved. It's different going from one team to another, settling in and once you get past that stage you want to keep pushing on and get a second to none understanding with team mates on the pitch. Once you build that relationship on the pitch, things will only get better.

"There's so many good players at Arsenal. Obviously training every single day, you get to know them better. You get to know what they like to do, what side they like to go on, where to play passes through and so on.

"I play football, I can play across the front three positions, depending on who is available, what formation, coming up against different opponents. The manager is going to select who he thinks is best for the game.

"The last few weeks we've not spoken about different positions. Once I get out onto the pitch I will just give it 100 per cent."

Welbeck played just four minutes as a substitute in Premier League victories over Everton and QPR this week but Wenger is adamant the England international remains an important part of his plans.

"He's very important and has played many, many games since the start of the season," the Frenchman insisted on Friday. "I think he's played in nearly every single game. His position is one of the three up front, central, left of right. He can play anywhere.

"If you check the statistics, you will see he is one of the players who has played the most games for us - just not in the last couple of games.

"You can make an individual debate on every single player, that is always a possibility, but what is important is that you have moments in the season where some players play a bit less. Most of the time it's up front, because not every single player can play every game in the biggest part of the season.

"You have a player like Olivier Giroud, who is playing at the moment but he missed four months [of the season through injury]. During that period, Welbeck played every single game."
